Ndidi Eyes Clean Sheet Against Brazil

Wilfred Ndidi Targeting A Clean Sheet Against Brazil

Ahead of Nigeria's first game at the FIFA U20 World Cup against Brazil, defender Wilfred Ndidi says he is targeting a clean sheet against Selecao.

"Just as strikers wish to score goals before games, same goes clean sheet for a defender, and in the Brazil game my aim is for us not to conceded," he told SL10.ng.

The vice captain of the Nigeria team, however, insists the job of defending is a team effort and not just a duty for the defenders.

"Our style of defending is as a unit, we defend as a team not just the back four but the entire team puts in a shift to aid us at the back," he said.

He rounded off by urging Nigerians back home to pray for them to overcome the Brazilians, as on their own part they have resolve to put in their best.

"We need prayers, from Nigerians watching us back home, on our part we will put in our best to put smiles on their faces by the grace of God."

Yahaya has beaten Moses Simon in a fierce battle for a starting shirt in Monday’s U20 World Cup showdown against Brazil after he was picked ahead of the Belgium-based forward. Both exciting forwards did not feature at the recent African Youth Championship in Senegal – Yahaya suffered a major knee injury, while the Belgian club of Moses Simon Gent refused to release him for the tournament. Otherwise, Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has gone with the players he has prepared for the past week to start this crucial opening Group E match inside the 11,000-capacity Stadium Taranaki in New Plymouth, New Zealand. The defence has fullbacks Musa Mohammed and Mustapha Abdullahi with Wilfred Ndidi partnering Zaharadeen Bello in central defence. Ifeanyi Ifeanyi will be the ball winner in midfield for the African champions and Ifeanyi Matthew the more offensive player in the engine room. Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho will enjoy a free role in midfield, playing behind Musa Yahaya and Taiwo Awoniyi, while Isaac Success will be the team’s target man. Flying Eagles (4-4-2) vs Brazil Joshua Enaholo – Musa Mohammed (Skipper), Mustapha Abdullahi, Wilfred Ndidi, Zaharadeen Bello – Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Ifeanyi Matthew, Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Yahaya – Taiwo Awoniyi, Isaac Success Subs: Dele Alampasu, Olorunleke Ojo, Izu Omego, Kingsley Sokari, Godwin Saviour, Chidera Ezeh, Bernard Bulbwa, Chidiebere Nwakali, Akinjide Idowu, Moses Simon

Am expecting a brace each from 3 of our players and possibly a goal from a defender. I won't mind a Pen. conversion also from Musa Muhammed. Wilfred, the clean slate is yours.

Tartan, I will advise you to wait till after the match. The Brazilian team is equally good and knows what the Eagles will be putting on the table. What determines who wins the match now lies in the competent of the presiding coach in terms of technicality. The winning will come from the coaches.. and that is a fact.
